Ancient Greek city states

Elis

Elis is an ancient Greek city, located in the regional unit of Élida in the region of Western Greece. It is located about 14 km northeast of Amalias.

The city of Élis is historically linked to the sanctuary in ancient Olympia. Thanks to it, the city had great political power, which it tried to consolidate by increasing its influence in Olympia. For example, the judges at the Olympic Games were elected from the citizens of Élís and neighbouring ancient Pisa.

The architect Libon and the philosophers Pyrrhon and Phaedo were born in this city. Interestingly, all of them have the attribute 'from Élida' after their name.
