Ancient Greek city states
Olympia is an ancient Greek city located in the Elida regional unit (19 km west of Pyrgos).
The city of Olympia used to be the sanctuary of ancient Greece, and the Olympic Games were held here. The first games were held in 776 BC. In 1989, the Olympia Archaeological Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The city was inhabited around the 2nd millennium BC. Its decline dates back to the Roman Empire, when the city was conquered by the Germans. Subsequently, the Romans ordered the destruction of all pagan temples. However, the buildings that survived this rampage were later destroyed by earthquakes and floods in 522 and 551.
