Ancient Greek city states

Orchomenos

Orchomenos is an ancient Greek city located in the regional unit of Boeotia in Central Greece (about 130 km northwest of Athens).

The city of Orchomenos was founded by the Greek tribe of the Achaeans and gradually became so important that it rivalled nearby Thebes (only about 35 km away).

Orchomenos was a member of the Boeotian Amphictyony and sided with the Persians during the Greco-Persian Wars. Subsequently, it competed with Thebes and through this was destroyed several times. This happened in 363 BC and 349 BC. The city was then rebuilt by Alexander the Great, who helped it in its fight against Thebes.
