Ancient Greek city states
Patras is an ancient Greek city and today an important port on the Gulf of Patras, located in the northern Peloponnese, about 215 km west of Athens. Patras is the third largest city in the whole of Greece and currently has over 210,000 inhabitants.
The city of Patra used to be a member of the Achaean League, which was an oppositional force against Macedonia. The Society ceased to exist after its defeat by the Romans in 146 BC.
According to legend, the Apostle Andrew was crucified in the city of Patra (around 60 AD). The city subsequently became an archbishopric and a key place for the spread of Christianity to the wider area.
