Ancient Greek city states

Sikyon

Sikyon was one of the ancient Greek cities and was located in the northeast of the Peloponnese peninsula.

Historically, Sikyon was located on the road between Corinth and Achaia.

However, its origins are difficult to trace, as the first mention of it is in the Iliad, where the king of Sikyon is mentioned. King Orthagoras ruled here in the 7th century BC and his dynasty remained in power for more than a century. One of his descendants was Cleisthenes, who is reliably documented historically through the writings of Herodotus.

The city of Sikyon was an ally of Sparta in the Peloponnesian War and also took part in the Corinthian War or the Greco-Persian Wars. From 251 BC, Sikyon was a member of the Achaean League. However, its importance declined and by 150 AD the city was more or less destroyed.
