Ancient Greek city states
Trikala is an ancient Greek city located in Thessaly and is the capital of the district of the same name. Nowadays it has over 60 thousand inhabitants.
The town was originally named Trikke after the nymph of the same name. According to Greek mythology, the god of physicians, Asclepius, lived and ruled here. Many temples were dedicated to this god. The city itself was a centre of agriculture.
Trikala was involved in the Trojan War. In the 5th century BC the city was conquered by the Persians and after its liberation Trikala merged with other cities. In the 4th century BC the area was dominated by the ancient Macedonians, who were followed by the Romans, Goths, Huns, etc. The city was also part of the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire... nothing special.
