The unorganized, pebble beach Agiofarago is located in the southern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 75 km south of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion). It is surrounded by high rocks with a very interesting structure.
Agiofarago Beach is located on the southern coast of Crete in the Asterousia Mountains, at the exit of the gorge of the same name Agiofarago (translated as "Gorge of the Saints"). The beach is therefore only accessible by two ways - either by sea by boat (preferably from the ports of Matala, Agia Galini, Kokkinos Pyrgos or Kaloi Limenes beaches) or on foot through the gorge. If you have a choice, we definitely recommend the Agiofarago Gorge, which is quite manageable and will give you an extraordinary experience. The trail passes amidst high and steep cliffs, whose walls are disturbed by many smaller or larger caves. These caves were once inhabited by hermits and even today some of them are inhabited by clerics from the nearby sanctuaries of the Odigitria Monastery and the Chapel of St. Anthony (Agios Antonios), which dates back to the 13th century. Nowadays, the steep slopes of the gorge are widely used by climbers as an excellent training ground.
Agiofarago beach is a beautiful natural beach, without tourist facilities, covered only with small pebbles. The coastline is bathed by crystal clear sea, mostly calm and soon quite deep. The place is popular with divers and snorkelers, especially the outskirts of this small bay, near the rock walls. The western wall of the beach also forms a small rock arch under which you can swim.
If you are coming to the beach from inland, drive to the village of Sivas and then head towards the monastery of Odigitria. From Odigitria Monastery, a dirt road leads on to the Chapel of St Anthony (if you turn right at the monastery, you will reach the nearby Vathi beach). The passage through the gorge takes about half an hour (it is about 1.5 km long). The area of Agiofarago falls under the regional unit of Heraklion.
