Very popular sandy beach of Ammoudara lies in the northern part of Crete, approximately 6 km west from the capital city of Heraklion (Iraklion). It is the longest beach of the region.
Ammoudara is the longest beach of the regional unit of Heraklion, it stretches on the coastline with a length of around 5 km – from the capital city of Heraklion to the west direction until the mountains. The beautiful sandy beach is one of the main lures of the eponymous resort of Ammoudara (also written as Ammuodara or Amudara), which belongs to favourite holiday resorts on Crete.
Ammoudara Beach is covered by smooth golden sand along its entire length and washed by crystal clear water. The coastline is descending very slowly into the sea, therefor it is often being chosen by families with small children. The beach is well-organized, we can find beach bars and tavernas with sunbeds and umbrellas here and for its cleanness and equipment, the beach was awarded by the Blue Flag of the EU.
The beach is also known for are the water sport centres, offering various adrenaline sports. Although the sea direct at the coast is quite calm and warm, further on open sea are the waves getting bigger thanks to the northern winds, what are the fans of wind- and kitesurfing using frequently.
