The quiet sandy beach of Chiona is located in the eastern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 147 km east of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion).
Chiona Beach forms part of the quiet seaside resort of Palekastro, the easternmost resort on the island of Crete. Palekastro is located in a touristy, remote area, but it also finds its visitors. The resort boasts particularly beautiful beaches, which have even been awarded the EU Blue Flag for cleanliness.
Chiona beach is located in the southern part of the resort, below the larger and better known Kouremenos beach. Its surface is made up of fine sand, which continues along the very gentle seabed. Chiona is an unorganized beach and spacious enough, if you are looking for a bit of peace and privacy, then you will certainly enjoy it. Small tamarisk trees provide natural shade, and there are a couple of nice family-run tavernas with accommodation and a few small shops around the beach.
Around Chiona Beach you can also discover much smaller and more isolated coves, which are particularly popular with nudists. The ruins of a large harbour from the Minoan culture have been found near the beach, as Palekastro served as an important port during this period. There is also the archaeological site of Rousolakos, with the remains of a large town from the Minoan settlement.
About 8 km along the eastern coastline to the north lies the famous 'palm' beach of Vai, surrounded by a large grove of naturally growing date palms. In the opposite direction to the south (about 25 km) you reach the famous Xerokampos beach, famous for its light sand and azure blue sea.
