The gently sloping, sandy beach of Frangokastello is located in the southwestern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 135 km southwest of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion).
Frangokastello beach is located on the south coast of Crete, in the province of Chania (about 80 km southeast of Chania). The beach belongs to the town of the same name, Frangokastello, a quiet and small tourist resort on the southern side of the White Mountains.
The surface of the beach is made up of coarse sand, which continues very slowly along the seabed. You have to walk a short distance in the sea to reach a depth suitable for swimming. Frangokastello beach is ideal for small children to play in the shallow waters. The sea is crystal clear in this area and if you go to greater depths, the seabed becomes rocky and rich in underwater life. Diving and snorkelling are therefore popular activities for local visitors. However, during strong southerly winds, larger waves build up and the strong winds can lift the sand on the beach into the air.
Frangokastello beach is quite wide and partly organised. There are sun loungers and umbrellas available for tourists to rent and there is also a tavern close to the beach. Other tourist services such as restaurants, cafes and accommodation are located in the adjacent resort. There are no water sports facilities.
Frangokastello Beach is best known for its location directly below the famous Venetian fortress of Frangokastello, which was built in 1371 and was later the scene of a battle between a group of Cretan rebels and the Turkish army. There is also a mysterious legend attached to the fortress, which is still alive, as the shadows of the warriors, the so-called Drosoulites, regularly appear here. The shadows move from the church of Agios Nikitas, across the beach and up to the fortress and are said to have been seen by many people.
If you are staying longer in the area, you can visit other nearby beaches that are also nice and quiet - for example Lakki beach, Koutelos beach, Fata Morgana beach or Orthi Ammos beach.
