The clean, pebble beach of Glyka Nera (Sweet Water) is located in the southwestern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 154 km southwest of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion). Sweet Water beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete, yet it remains quiet and non-commercial.
Glyka Nera beach is not only one of the most beautiful beaches on Crete, but also one of the cleanest. It can be found about 75 km south of the regional town of Chania, between the seaside resorts of Loutro and Chora Sfakion. The beach is hidden behind a wall of high rocks and is quite difficult to access, so it is not crowded with tourists. And those who do find their way here mainly opt for boat transport.
Glyka Nera beach is covered with small white pebbles that continue on the seabed and are quite pleasant to walk on. At first the water is shallow, but then it drops sharply into the depths of the sea and gets noticeably colder. What makes the beach unique and picturesque is that it is only a few metres wide and then the high and steep rocks rise abruptly, forming a natural wall for this small bay. It is therefore recommended not to lie completely at the back of the beach, directly under the rocks, because sometimes the mountain goats will release some rocks from the rocks that could injure you.
The beach is specific for another reason, which is why it got its name "Sweet Water Beach" (or "Glyka Nera" in Greek), meaning "clear water". There is a source of fresh water under the surface of the beach. There is no specific spring, but if you just roll away a few pebbles, the hole fills up with fresh water in no time.
The beach is semi-organized, and during the main summer season there is a small tavern that stands on a stone in the sea, where you can refresh yourself with chilled drinks. There are also a few sunbeds and umbrellas for hire and if you prefer more natural shade, there are also a few tamarisk bushes growing on the beach. Otherwise, the beach is left natural and nudism or camping is tolerated.
The quickest and most convenient way to get to Sweet Water beach is by boat - preferably by taxi boats from the nearby resorts of Loutro and Chora Sfakion. Unfortunately, you can't get here by car, but there is another way, and that is on foot using the paths dug into the rocks along the coast. It takes about an hour to walk from Loutro and about half an hour from Chora Sfakion. However, the paths are a bit challenging and not very suitable for those who suffer from a fear of heights, but on the other hand they will give you a wonderful view of the open sea.
