The small sandy beach of Kalamaki is located in the Mesara Bay in the southern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 68 km southwest of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion).
Kalamaki is a nice beach covered with fine sand and washed by crystal clear waters. The part of the beach immediately adjacent to the resort is well organized and has beach service in the form of sunbeds and umbrellas as well as snack stands. Visitors can also take advantage of the water sports facilities on offer here, and young children can have fun at the playground.
Although the entrance to the sea in this area is gentle, there are large rocky platforms in the sea at the beach/sea interface which can be slippery. If you will be staying here with small children, you'd better check the seabed off the coast first and choose a safe place. Mesara Bay is also very open and is subject to fierce waves during periods of strong winds. Entering the sea in high winds and in the hidden rocky patches can be very dangerous. On the other hand, on calm days, the beach is an oasis of tranquillity that will make you forget the worries of everyday life. The view of the opposite islets of Paximadia is particularly impressive at sunset.
Kalamaki Beach forms part of the pleasant and peaceful seaside resort of Kalamaki, attracting visitors with its quality tourist service and the beautiful beaches of Mesara Bay. Kalamaki Beach is just one of several beautiful beaches that line the shores of the bay, and the beaches south of Kalamaki are particularly popular with tourists - Kommos Beach, one of the longest beaches on the island of Crete and a nesting ground for the Kareta giant tortoise, and Matala Beach, a beautiful sandy beach with an impressive rock outcropping full of excavated caves.
