The small sandy beach of Kalamokania is located in the southeastern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 119 km southeast of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion). Its shores are washed by azure blue sea.
On the southeast coast of the island is the medium-sized seaside resort of Makrigialos, whose main attractions are good tourist facilities and beautiful sandy beaches, washed by crystal clear sea. And one of these beaches is Kalamokania beach.
Kalamokania beach is located in the western part of the resort, it is unorganized and covered with soft sand. Small tamarisk trees growing close to the beach provide natural shade for visitors. The name of the beach is derived from a migratory bird called "kalamokanas" in Greek (it is similar to a stork, with long legs and black and white feathers), which can be seen here at the mouth of a small stream during its migration. There are several small hotels and taverns by the beach.
Near Kalamokania and the neighbouring Katovigli beach, the remains of a Roman villa, inhabited in the 1st to 3rd centuries, have been uncovered. Just a few hundred metres inland, you can visit another archaeological site with the ruins of an old Minoan villa, dating from around the 15th century BC. From the local harbour, cruise ships sail to the nearby islet of Koufonisi.
Further east along the coast, we reach first the aforementioned Katovigli beach, then the most popular and most famous beach of the resort - Makrigialos beach, and the easternmost beach is Lagoufa beach, which is already located on the border of Makrigialos and Analipsi.
