The pleasant and peaceful pebble and sandy beach of Kolymbari is located in the northwestern part of the Greek island of Crete, the westernmost of the beaches in the long Gulf of Chania. Its distance is about 163 km west of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion).
The beach belongs to the tourist resort of the same name, Kolymbari, located about 24 km west of the regional town of Chania. Kolymbari beach forms part of a long stretch of beach that stretches eastwards from here to the resort of Stalos, or to the regional town of Chania itself. Kolymbari lies right at the foot of the Rodopou peninsula.
Kolymbari is a long and spacious beach, the surface of which is a mixture of sand and pebbles (the sand is also artificially replenished regularly to prevent the beach from disappearing). The coastline slopes gently into the water in this area and the beautifully clear azure blue sea attracts visitors to swim. The beach is regularly awarded the EU Blue Flag. However, it is advisable to bring water shoes, as in some places there are larger and sharper rocks hiding under the sea surface.
Kolymbari beach is semi-organised, with sunbeds and umbrellas available to visitors, including a sports centre, beach bar and several nearby tavernas. While you're here, grab a bite to eat at one of the local fish tavernas, which prepare dishes made from the fresh catch of local fishermen and are renowned in the surrounding area. Other tourist services can be found in the resort itself.
Indeed, the beach is often rather quiet and never crowded, but it has found a following among locals and tourists alike. And if you're looking for some real peace and privacy, head west past the small fishing harbour where you'll find a beautiful rocky coastline with small coves. The famous monastery of Gonia (Moni Odigitrias) is also nearby. However, strong northerly winds sometimes bring with them bigger waves, which is generally a feature of the beaches off the north coast of Crete.
