Kouremenos Beach - Crete
The long and beautiful sandy beach of Kouremenos is located in the eastern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 147 km east of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion). The crystal clear water and the gradual entrance to the sea are its other attractions.
Kouremenos Beach forms part of the quiet seaside resort of Palekastro, the easternmost resort on the island of Crete. Palekastro is located in a touristy, remote area, but it will also find its visitors. The resort boasts particularly beautiful beaches, which have even been awarded the EU Blue Flag for cleanliness. The largest and most famous beach is Kouremenos beach.
Kouremenos is a beach more than 1.5 km long, covered with fine and golden sand, with a gradual entrance to the sea. Its shores are washed by crystal clear and beautiful blue sea, which has become a paradise for windsurfing enthusiasts. The Palekastro area is exposed to strong winds and the local bays provide surfers with ideal conditions for their sport. The only thing that adds to its perfection is that the beach remains very calm and closely connected to the surrounding nature.
Sun loungers and umbrellas are available in some parts of the beach, but the beach is mostly unorganised and tourists mainly use the shade of the surrounding tamarisk bushes. Sports and technical facilities for windsurfers are provided by the local sports centre, which includes a windsurfing school. In addition to surfers, sports divers are also attracted by the rocky walls of the surrounding bays. Near the beach you will find several tavernas serving tasty meals made from fresh sea catches and a few small guesthouses.
About 8 km along the eastern coastline to the north lies the famous "palm" beach of Vai, surrounded by a large grove of naturally growing date palms. In the opposite direction to the south (about 25 km) you reach the famous Xerokampos beach, famous for its light sand and azure blue sea.
