The long sand and shingle beach of Koutsounari is located in the southeastern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 102 km southeast of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion). It is typical for its grey-black colour.
Koutsounari Beach, also known as Koutsounari Long Beach, forms part of a small and quiet seaside resort. The beach is located in Lassithi Prefecture, about 8 km east of the popular tourist resort of Ierapetra.
Koutsounari beach is covered with a mixture of dark sand and small pebbles, which continues on to the seabed. Because of its colouring, the pebbles can get very hot in the summer, so don't forget your shoes (especially for children) for walks along the shore. The coastline slopes gently into the sea at first, but then drops into the water quite quickly and the pebbly surface soon becomes rocky. So while children play in the shallow water at the shore, you can have a good swim a little further on. Swimming in the crystal clear water will surely delight you. Koutsounari is also a popular spot for divers and snorkelers.
Koutsounari is one of the most popular beaches on the south coast of Crete and also one of the longest beaches, so you will never feel crowded. The beach is partially organized, especially in front of the hotels and tavernas, where you will also find sunbeds with umbrellas and beach showers. The rest of the beach is left natural and small tamarisk trees provide shade for visitors.
In the eastern part of the beach lies the small bay of Psaropoula with its soft sand and calm azure waters. Sun loungers with parasols and a water sports centre are available for tourists.
