The small pebble beach of Mononaftis is located in the northern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 28 km northwest of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion).
Mononaftis Beach is located in a small bay in the north of Crete, just 1 km north of the popular holiday resort of Agia Pelagia. The name "Mononaftis" means "lonely sailor" and is said to refer to a tragedy in which a shipwreck occurred and the only crew member was rescued.
Mononaftis is a small beach, only about 80 metres long and rather narrow. It is covered with small pebbles, and in some places with pebbles. The sea is beautifully clear in this area, gently sloping at first and then dropping sharply in depth. The seabed is rather rocky and the break is popular for snorkelling and diving. Diving in particular has a tradition in the area and there is a diving school here.
Mononaftis is one of the organised beaches, with sun loungers and umbrellas and beach showers available to visitors. You can also try out the water sports on offer or go to one of the nearby tavernas and restaurants. On the rocky outcrop above the beach you will also find several hotels and hotel apartments with a beautiful view of the entire bay.
The bay in which Mononaftis beach lies is already more open than, for example, the nearby beaches of Agia Pelagia or Ligaria, which are very popular with tourists. And although it's surrounded by rocky cliffs, it's more prone to windy weather, with bigger waves rising during periods of strong northerly winds (called meltemi). Mostly, however, the sea is calm and well heated. The neighbouring beach of Psaromoura is similar.
