Palaiokastro (also spelled Paliokastro or Paleokastro) is located on the western shore of Heraklion Bay, near the eponymous remote village of Palaiokastro. The village is very popular with the residents of Heraklion - many of them have bought small weekend houses here, escaping the tourist traffic of the capital. The beach is also popular with locals.

Palaiokastro is a picturesque beach covered with pebbles, with a few sunbeds and umbrellas as well as moored fishing boats. The sea here drops sharply to a deeper level and, especially in the western part of the beach, there are larger rocks and pieces of rock hiding under the sea surface. The rocky bottom of the bay attracts lovers of snorkelling and fishing. However, the sea surface is usually calm, as the beach is protected by high cliffs on both sides.

Near the beach you will find a small market and several small taverns and taverns. To the east of the beach is a large limestone cliff, once dominated by the Venetian fortress of Palaiokastro, whose purpose was to protect Heraklion Bay from enemy attacks. Over time, natural steps have formed in the rock below the fortress, so you can climb up and even jump into the sea from as high as you dare.

The view of the beach can be spoiled a little by the highway bridge that runs high above the beach not far from here. This is because the highway connecting the cities of Heraklion and Chania passes through here, with a turn-off to the village of Palaiokastro. But the traffic noise doesn't reach the beach.
