A long, quiet beach with dark grey sand lies in the southern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 76 km southeast of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion).
Sidonia beach is located on the southern coast of Crete, in its eastern part, where the hustle and bustle of the biggest Cretan resorts no longer reach. The eponymous village of Sidonia is situated in a small valley with a flowing stream, in a quiet tourist area, about 9 km east of the resort of Ano Viannos and 1 km south of the village of Psari Forada, after which the beach is also sometimes called "Psari Forada". Occasionally, the names "Syndonia" or "Kato Psari" can also be found.
Sidonia beach is interesting because its surface is made up of grey to grey-black sand that sinks into the crystal clear waters of the sea. Together they create a nice colour contrast. The beach is not exposed to strong winds, so the sea is rather calm, as is the whole area, including the beach. Sidonia is one of the quiet and isolated beaches, and there is only minimal organization - here and there you can find a few sunbeds with umbrellas and a snack stand or a water sports offer, including a beach volleyball court. Natural shade is mostly provided by small tamarisk trees. Several tavernas, shops and accommodation facilities are also available to visitors in the adjacent village of Sidonia.
According to local legend, the present village is located on the site of the ancient town of Sidonia. A final pearl - the name "Psari Forada" means "grey-haired mare".
