Agia Varvara (Malia) - Crete

The tiny resort of Agia Varvara (Malia) is located in the northern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 40 km east of the capital city of Heraklion (Iraklion). In fact, it is just a large hotel complex located in a beautiful bay on the coast of the island.

The small Greek village of Agia Varvara lies between the larger and popular tourist resorts of Malia and Sissi. The village itself would probably be easy to miss, as there is really nothing here except a few houses and a small guesthouse. The reason why Agia Varvara has made its way into the offers of travel agencies is the hotel complex located on the very coast, in a nice bay.

The bay consists of a pleasant sandy beach, equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas and lined with several tamarisk trees. Directly opposite the beach is the tiny islet of Agia Varvara and more experienced swimmers will be happy to swim to it. Beware, however, of the stronger sea currents that sometimes occur here. Like most beaches on the north coast of Crete, Agia Varvara is prone to frequent north-westerly winds.

The village and the resort as a whole take their name from the local church of Agia Varvara (Santa Barbara).
