The picturesque fishing village of Almirida is located in the northwestern part of the Greek island of Crete, surrounded by beautiful surrounding nature. Its distance is about 126 km west of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion).
The tranquil seaside resort of Almirida (also known as Almyrida or Almeritha) belongs to the Apokoronos region, which is famous for its lush and almost untouched nature and beautiful sea. There are several small hotels, restaurants and tavernas for the convenience of visitors, and of course there are also shops selling various goods, a pharmacy and an ATM. You can also buy local wine, olive oil or the famous Cretan honey from local producers.
The resort of Almirida lies about 23 km east of Chania and just 1 km west of the popular resort of Plaka, the largest village in the region (not to be confused with Plaka in the north-eastern part of Crete). Plaka is famous for the hospitality of the locals and every July the Cretan "plakiana" festival (in honour of the famous lyre player Michael Papadakis, called Plakianos) is held here.
The village of Almirida is situated along the north-west coast of Crete, in the southern part of Souda Bay and near Cape Drapanos. The resort has two beautiful sandy beaches with a gentle entrance to the water and calm sea. The beaches are separated by a rocky promontory with a small white chapel from the second half of the 6th century, with a preserved mosaic floor and the foundations of an altar.
Tourists can rent sun loungers and parasols on the beaches. The larger, eastern beach of Almirida will also provide more adrenaline-fuelled fun for more active visitors in the form of windsurfing and other water sports.
The tavernas near the beaches are renowned for their cuisine, focusing on fresh fish and traditional Cretan dishes. Fishing has a long tradition in the village, with a fishing harbour at the eastern end of Almirida beach and fishing boats bobbing on the sea every day.
The unspoilt nature and the vast olive groves that surround the village invite you to romantic walks and cycling. Watching the breathtaking sunset from the local beaches is a particularly popular activity, and if you follow the coastline eastwards towards Cape Drapanos, you will see several so-called sea caves. Opposite the beach is the islet of Karga, a natural breeding ground for several species of birds. It is often visited by local fishermen, but also by beachgoers in rented boats.
If you want to explore further afield, you can visit the Botanical Park in Omolos, enjoy a day of water fun at the Limnoupolis Water Park or go to the Samaria Gorge. Of course, we recommend a visit to the Venetian port town of Chania, just a short distance from Almirida.
The peaceful atmosphere of this place together with the beautiful sea, picturesque nature and good tourist facilities attract especially families with children and couples in love. Especially in spring, when everything comes to life and blooms, the surrounding area of the village is very charming. Children love to build sandcastles on the local beaches, which are among the most beautiful on Crete.
The area is all about its picturesque setting and close connection with the surrounding nature, so don't expect any big tourist traffic. However, you can go to the nearby town of Chania for more fun and shopping (there is a regular bus service, and you can also use taxi services).
