The peaceful seaside resort of Damnoni is located in the southwestern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 113 km southwest of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion). It belongs to the prefecture of Rethymno.
The resort of Damnoni is a rather small village, which was built in close proximity to a beautiful sandy beach, in the bay of the same name Damnoni. The peaceful resort lies on the southern coast of Crete, about 35 km south of Rethymno and 3 km east of the neighbouring resort of Plakias, surrounded by the mountainous Cretan countryside.
The resort has one large hotel resort with its own large swimming pool and beautiful views of Damnoni Bay, as well as several smaller villas and individual apartments for rent. Damnoni is a small resort, with a few tavernas, bars, a shop and a bus stop from where you can reach the larger, regional town of Rethymno (on the north coast) as well as the neighbouring town of Plakias. In the high tourist season, there is even a small motor train that runs between Damnoni and Plakias.
There is a riding school nearby, where you can arrange a horseback ride to experience the beautiful nature and coastline from horseback. You can also rent a tennis court at the hotel resort, or enjoy some of the water activities on offer (such as windsurfing or water skiing) while lazing on the beach.
The main beach of the resort is the beautiful Damnoni beach, about 500 m long, protected by the rocky walls of the bay. The surface of the beach is made up of coarse sand, which turns into a mixture of sand and pebbles towards the sea. The sea is wonderfully clear in this area and the seabed sinks quite quickly. Damnoni beach is organised and very well equipped.
The western part of the beach is more organised and busier, while the eastern end is quieter and there are several small and isolated sandy coves hidden among the rocks. There is, for example, the small Ammoudaki beach with sunbeds (often referred to as a nudist beach), the very small and purely natural Klisidi beach, Amoudi beach with sunbeds or Schinaria beach, especially popular with divers.
Damnoni is especially suitable for those who want to spend their holidays in a beautiful and quiet part of Crete, away from the crowds and tourist noise. You will enjoy a pleasant and well-equipped sandy beach, as well as the privacy of one of the small coves that make up the rugged coastline. But for some, the peace and quiet may be too much.
