The seaside resort of Ferma will delight especially lovers of tranquillity and wild surrounding nature. It is located in the southeastern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 106 km southeast of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion).
Originally a fishing village, today the small and quiet seaside resort of Ferma is situated in a quiet area off the southern coast of Crete, about 10 km east of the popular tourist resort of Ierapetra. The village is located in the eastern part of the island of Crete, which falls under the regional unit of Lassithi.
The centre of Ferma is formed by a local road which is lined on both sides with small hotels and apartments for rent, several tavernas and bars as well as small shops selling various goods. A typical tourist promenade with good facilities for visitors to the resort. The old buildings of the village are located a short distance away.
However, you will not enjoy the nightlife here very much. For night entertainment or more shopping, tourists head to the nearby resort of Ierapetra.
The coastline around Ferma is very rocky and consists of several beautiful coves with picturesque beaches protected by the surrounding high cliffs. Most of the beaches have to be descended, usually by wooden stairs. The sea in this area is crystal clear and swimming is a real treat. Thanks to the rocky walls of the coves, even snorkelling and diving enthusiasts head here.
The largest bay and beach around the resort is Ferma Beach, also known as Livadi Beach. Its surface is made up of warm sand, sometimes a mixture of sand and pebbles, which gradually continue along the seabed. The shallow waters of the bay also attract families with children and non-swimmers. The beach is located in the eastern part of the resort and is partially organized - on one side there is a tavern, which includes several sunbeds and umbrellas, the other part of the beach is left natural.
If you walk westwards along the coast, you will come across other smaller beaches and small beaches that provide plenty of peace and privacy. There are, for example, Pigadi and Giorgakis beaches.
A nice tip for a hike is the Mylonas Gorge (or also St. John's Gorge), you will find it more commonly referred to as "Mylonas Falls" in maps. The gorge starts near the village of Saint John, at an altitude of about 500 m, and descends gradually through the surrounding countryside to the coast, to Kakia Skala beach. Unfortunately, it is not possible to walk through the entire length of the gorge, as you will encounter an obstacle in the form of high waterfalls. However, you can go to the Mylonas Falls themselves, which lie less than 7 km inland from the resort. There are two trails leading up to the falls (which are about 300 m above sea level), starting at Kakia Skala beach. The first trail starts at a pine forest and much of the way passes by an old concrete ditch that used to carry water down to Koutsounari. The second trail follows the riverbed and, especially in winter, is very challenging. The falls themselves are about 20 metres high and form a small pond with crystal clear and very refreshing water.
The resort is located in an area dotted with small and traditional Greek villages and Ferma is no exception in this respect, so we recommend it mainly to those tourists who fly to their holiday mainly to relax and recharge their batteries from the surrounding beautiful nature.
If you prefer entertainment and lively nightlife, look more towards the resorts on the north coast of the island.
