The small, quiet resort of Kalathas is located in the northwestern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 145 km west of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion). The resort boasts a beautiful sandy beach.
The seaside village of Kalathas is situated on the Akrotiri peninsula, which is characterised by its massive rock massifs and its almost desert-like character. The village lies off its western coast, in a beautiful sea bay, about 11 km northeast of the main regional town of Chania.
Kalathas is a relatively young resort, where Chania residents who did not want to live in the tourist centre but wanted to stay close to the city started to build their houses. The tourist facilities of the resort consist more of small hotels and guesthouses, shops with various goods and cosy taverns. Kalathas is thus one of the quieter areas.
The main beach of Kalathas is located in a relatively large bay at the northern edge of the resort. Its surface is covered with beautifully fine and golden sand and the shoreline descends into the sea only very gently, so it is no wonder that the place is especially popular with families with small children. The sea here is crystal clear and its surface is usually calm, although strong northerly winds can sometimes bring bigger waves. Directly opposite the beach, a small island juts out of the sea and can be swum to.
The beach is very spacious, equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas and a nearby tavern or snack stand. In high season, a lifeguard is on hand to ensure the safety of visitors.
On both sides of the beach, behind small rock outcrops, there are smaller and unorganized beaches, providing more peace and privacy.
Just a few kilometres to the north, the famous film beach of Stavros, nicknamed "Zorbas Beach", is hidden in the rugged coastline of the peninsula. This beautiful sandy beach is where the final scenes of the 1964 film "Zorba the Greek" starring Anthony Quinn were filmed.
Even the rocky terrain of the Akrotiri peninsula hides several interesting and historical monuments. There are three important religious buildings - the Gouvernetto Monastery, the Agia Triada Monastery and the Katholiko Chapel. The Agia Triada is one of the largest monasteries in Crete and today forms part of a larger group specialising in the production of organic wine and organic olive oil. The shop selling local products is located in the monastery.
The Akrotiri peninsula also hosts one of Crete's international airports, Chania Airport.
Kalathas is a picturesque resort located close to the lively tourist resort of Chania, but at the same time well hidden in the harsher environment of the Akrotiri peninsula. Apart from the tranquillity and friendly atmosphere, tourists also come here for the beautiful sandy beach and pleasant swimming, while for entertainment they head to the nearby town of Chania. There are also regular bus services to the village.
