The picturesque Greek village of Kasteli is located inland, in the eastern part of the Greek island of Crete. The resort is about 35 km southeast of the capital city of Heraklion (Iraklion).
On the island of Crete there are several villages called Kasteli (or Kastelli). This village of Kasteli is located about 15 km south of the popular tourist resort of Hersonissos and is also sometimes referred to as Kasteli Pediados (after the local fertile plain, where olives and grapes are grown). To the south of Kasteli is a military airfield.
The village of Kasteli is not exactly tiny, with a permanent population of around two thousand, and among the neighbouring villages, Kasteli is the busiest and best-serviced. There are several shops for tourists, including a supermarket, a café, a sweet shop, several nice taverns and services such as an ATM, a pharmacy and a playground for children. There is also a small guesthouse, but otherwise the village has little to offer as a tourist resort. However, it can serve well as a nice stopover during your travels around the eastern part of Crete. There are also regular markets with local produce.
The village of Kasteli is unique in that it is home to the remains of several Byzantine churches (the four you read about most often are Afentis Christos, Agia Fotini, Agios Georgios Revithiotis and Agios Ionnis Romanito). There was also once a Byzantine castle, but unfortunately nothing of it has survived. Today, a municipal school stands on its site.
