Resort Lygaria - characteristics and facilities

The small resort of Lygaria, protected by a rocky bay, attracts visitors mainly for its good tourist facilities and beautiful sandy beach, but still manages to retain the atmosphere of a quiet Greek town. In addition to the pleasant beach, you will find a variety of accommodation, restaurants and tavernas, shops selling a variety of goods, as well as night bars and car rental, a pharmacy and an ATM.

Near the bay you can see the ruins of the former monastery of Panagia Ligariani, which was one of the most important monasteries in the area in its time and gave its name to the picturesque seaside resort.

West of Lygaria, just over the hill (about 1 km), lies another pretty and popular tourist resort, Agia Pelagia. These resorts are very similar in type, including the stunning sandy beach of Agia Pelagia, which is also a popular diving base. If you head east (or rather south - about 10 km), you will reach the seaside resort of Paleokastro.

Lygaria beach is located in a very well sheltered bay. The combination of fine, golden sand, a gradual entry into the sea and glowing turquoise water attracts many tourists, including families with smaller children. Lygaria is an organised beach, including an interesting range of water sports.

Excursions and sights nearby

The nearby monastery of Savathianon, one of the most beautiful monasteries in Crete, is certainly worth a visit, in the grounds of which (Patsos Gorge) there is a cave with a built-in church of Aghios Antonio. We can also recommend a trip to the small village of Rodgia, with its magnificent view over the whole bay and the town of Heraklion, or the village of Achlada with its beautiful old stone fountain and the churches of Aghios Ioannis and Aghios Tryfonas.

The proximity to the main road makes the resort a good starting point for exploring the beauty of the whole island of Crete. Don't miss the capital city of Heraklion with its remains of the Venetian walls, beautiful harbour and other historical sites.

For whom the centre is suitable

The resort of Ligaria is ideal for a relaxing holiday by the sea, where you can enjoy the beautiful sandy beach, nearby tavernas and maybe even a little adrenaline in the form of diving or other water sports. But don't expect a lively nightlife or other activities. On the other hand, the capital is close by, so you can go there for entertainment, shopping and historical sightseeing.
