The quiet seaside resort of Myrtos is located in the southeastern part of the Greek island of Crete, about 78 km southeast of the capital Heraklion (Iraklion). Along the resort lies one of the most beautiful beaches of the southern coast of Crete.
Originally a small fishing village, today the popular tourist resort of Myrtos has seen significant development in recent years, while still retaining the atmosphere of a traditional Greek village. Myrtos lies about 13 km west of the popular tourist resort of Ierapetra, in the valley of the river Kryos (translated as "Cold River"). The town is surrounded by beautiful Cretan countryside and just 6 km inland you will discover the famous Sarakinas Gorge.
During the summer season, the inhabitants of Mirtos live on tourism and the rest of the year they are mainly engaged in agriculture, which is particularly successful here. Myrtos belongs to the prefecture of Lassithi.
The resort of Myrtos has a variety of accommodation, from individual rooms for rent to smaller hotels. Tourists can use the services of several pleasant taverns, cafes, bars, various shops and a petrol station. It is recommended to go especially to the local famous fish taverns, where chefs prepare specialties from freshly caught seafood. If you need additional services such as a pharmacy or ATM, you will need to go to the nearby resort of Ierapetra.
In Myrtos you can visit the interesting museum of archaeology and folk art. Near the village, the site of the early Minoan settlement of Fournou Korfi has been uncovered (about 3.5 km to the east), while to the west you can find, for example, the remains of a Minoan villa (in Pyrgos) or the remains of the Roman baths of Agios Antonios. The picturesque narrow streets of the town and the coastline around the small fishing harbour invite you to take romantic walks in the early evening.
The pride of the resort is its quiet but well-equipped sand and shingle beach of Myrtos. Thanks to the cleanliness of the sea and the quality of the tourist facilities, the beach has been awarded the EU Blue Flag and is not affected by strong northerly winds.
We could recommend Myrtos resort to those visitors who come for their holiday mainly to relax from the noise and bustle of the city. The town lies in a very quiet area and you can totally feel the harmony of the locals with the beautiful surrounding nature. Myrtos is located close to the main road through the island, but the commuting distances to the busiest Cretan resorts are longer from here.
