Greek philosophers
Demetrios of Phaleros was a Greek philosopher, orator, historian, critic, grammarian and politician who was born in 350 BC and died in 283 BC. He was a pupil of the peripatetic Theophrastus.
None of Demetrius's writings have survived, but information about him is given by Diogenes Laertios, who mentions him in his work "Life and Opinions of Famous Philosophers".
Demetrios is considered the last of the great orators, according to Cicero he is "the last orator known by name".
In 317 BC, Demetrios was made governor of Athens by the Macedonian king Cassander. Demetrius I Poliorcetes, however, was expelled from Athens and fled to Thebes and then to Alexandria. In Alexandria he worked at the court of Ptolemy I Soter and was instrumental in founding the Library of Alexandria. He was subsequently expelled from Alexandria by Ptolemy Philadelphus.
