Agios Stefanos

The nice sandy and pebble beach of Agios Stefanos is located in the south-western part of the Greek island of Kos, in the bay of Kefalos, which lies at a distance of about 37 km from the capital. Agios Stefanos beach is known for its beautiful natural scenery and a small archaeological site right by the sea.

Agios Stefanos (St. Stephen's) Beach is set in the mountainous landscape of the Kefalos peninsula, but there is also plenty of greenery and a small archaeological site nearby. Agios Stefanos is a quiet beach with a very gentle entrance to the sea, suitable for small children who can wade in the shallow water without fear. The surface of the beach is a mixture of sand and small pebbles.

Visitors can rent sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach and enjoy refreshments in several local taverns and small cafes. Agios Stefanos is a reasonably spacious beach with a quieter atmosphere. Shops selling a variety of goods can be found in the adjacent resort of Kampos, while wider shopping and dining options are available in the neighbouring tourist resort of Kefalos.

The bay with the beaches of Agios Stefanos, Kefalos and Kamari are among the most photographed spots on Kos. From Agios Stefanos beach, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the sea and the small island of Agios Nikolaos (better known as Kastri) with the eponymous blue and white church of St. Nicholas shining in the distance. Those interested can rent a boat or jet ski on the beach and go to the islet to have a look, many enthusiasts swim straight there (thanks to the shallow sea, you can literally walk part of the way to the islet). The reefs around the islet are also an excellent place for snorkelling.

Just off the beach of Agios Stefanos, on the coast of the island, are the remains of the early Christian basilica of Agios Stefanos (St. Stephen). Interestingly, the archaeological site around the basilica extends into the sea, giving you an amazing view of the remains of ancient buildings submerged by sea water when diving or snorkelling.

Agios Stefanos beach is easily accessible, situated close to the main road connecting Kos town with the Kefalos peninsula. It is possible to drive to the small car park by the beach.
