The unique pebble beach of Thermes is located in the eastern part of the Greek island of Kos, about 12 km south of the capital. Its dominant feature are the hot healing springs that spring from the sea close to the shore. They are known as the Empros Thermes.
The unique character of Thermes Beach is due to its proximity to the volcanic island of Nissyros. Thermes beach is covered with small dark pebbles formed by volcanic activity and what attracts tourists here in particular are the thermal springs rising to the surface of the seabed. The springs are very hot, reaching temperatures of up to 60 °C. Thanks to the large rocks and boulders that form a small lake, the hot springs are beautifully dispersed and do not escape immediately into the open sea, so you can enjoy relaxation like in a spa.
Due to the hot summer weather on the island and the fact that the Embros springs are really warm, we recommend you to be careful in this respect and rather visit the beach in the morning or early evening, or swim outside the main pool where the springs are already more mixed with the surrounding sea. Thermes Beach is a popular excursion destination, especially in spring and autumn.
The Empros Thermes (Embros Therma), as the place is also called, is also popular because of the healing effects of these sulphur springs. They are said to have a beneficial effect on the human skin, various skin problems, muscle tension and rheumatic diseases. A large amount of calcium, sodium, sulphur, magnesium and other ions are dissolved in the water. Due to the sulphur content, the water acquires a delicate milky hue and gives off a typical smell.
Sun loungers, umbrellas and showers are available on the beach. After a dip in the thermal baths, visitors can also cool off with a refreshing drink from the local bar. However, this is the only facility in the vicinity, so it is better to be equipped with enough liquids or even food to take to the beach.
Thermes Beach is located on the south-east coast of Kos, close to the small seaside resort of Agios Fokas. Thermes Beach is easily accessible, there is a small car park up the hill above the beach or you can also use public transport. However, the road itself from the car park down to the coast is unpaved and quite steep, so suitable footwear and extra caution is advised.
