The international airport of Kos "Hippocrates" is located near the village of Antimachia and was named after the famous ancient physician Hippocrates, who was born on the island. This modern airport serves many charter and scheduled flights from various European destinations, and its traffic increases significantly during the summer months when thousands of tourists come to Kos to enjoy its beautiful beaches, historical monuments and pleasant Mediterranean climate. The airport has undergone several renovations in recent years to cope with the increasing number of passengers and to provide better services including shops, restaurants and car rental.
Hippocrates Airport was opened in 1964. Over the following years, its runway was extended to 2,400 metres, a new terminal was built and later this terminal was expanded and modernised. In 2015, the airport, along with 13 other regional airports in Greece, was privatised and since 2017 it has been operated by Fraport Greece.
