Antimachia - Kos Island

Antimachia

Antimachia is located in the southwestern part of the Greek island of Kos, close to the international airport. Its distance from the main town of Kos is about 23 km. The resort consists of the traditional Greek village of Antimachia, which attracts tourists mainly by its atmosphere and historical monuments.

The village of Antimachia and the old windmill

Antimachia is situated on a plateau, set in beautiful countryside. The ancient village charms its visitors with its picturesque quarters and traditional houses, but the main symbol of Antimachia remains the old windmills. The last working windmill of this type on the island stands here. The mill is located in the middle of the town and the staff will be happy to show you how the whole mechanism of the mill works for a small entrance fee. Even today, it is capable of grinding up to 800 kg of flour per day. In the adjacent shop you can taste and buy various biscuits baked from the flour milled here.

The villagers are mainly engaged in agriculture and tourism during the summer season. Accommodation options are available both in the village itself and in its surroundings. Accommodation is more modest and concentrates mainly on smaller family-run guesthouses and apartments. Be sure to also check out one of the local tavernas with their excellent cuisine of freshly caught fish. Antimachia may be inland, but it's only 4km from the popular resort of Mastichari and the eponymous Mastichari Beach. Heading the other way, on the south coast of the island is the resort of Kardamena with its beautiful sandy beach of Kardamena.

Antimachia is easily accessible, situated on the main road, very close to the international airport. You can use the local bus service (regular service Kos - Antimachia - Mastichari), taxi or rent a car. Several boats depart daily from the nearby port of Mastichari.

Fortress of Antimachia

The area is dominated by the historic Venetian castle of Antimachia, located just above the village, about 3 km to the east, and offers a beautiful view of the whole island of Kos. The fortress dates back to the 14th century and was built by the Knights of the Order of St. John who ruled the island at that time. You will be particularly impressed by its impressive outer walls, which are still very well preserved today.

In addition to the outer walls, two Venetian churches have also been preserved. Next to the fortress are the 18th century church of Agia Paraskevi and the 16th century church of Agios Nikolaos.

Antimachia and cultural festivals

Antimachia is also known for its music and dance tradition. It is said that some of the best musicians in all of Greece live here.

During the Feast of the Assumption (15 August) you can enjoy the traditional atmosphere of Greek festivities. The highlight of all the festivals is the "Giorti tou Meliou" (Honey Festival), which takes place at the end of August, and in addition to amazing displays of dancing and singing, you will have the opportunity to taste the very good honey from the area and the various delicacies made from it. At the beginning of September, there is a Wine Festival focused on tasting this delicious drink, again local.

A visit to the picturesque historic town of Antimachia is one of the most popular tourist excursions on the island of Kos.

For whom is a stay in Antimachia suitable

Antimachia is ideal for visitors who want to experience the authentic atmosphere of the island and a quieter environment away from the main tourist centres. It attracts history and culture lovers thanks to its Venetian castle and traditional windmill. The village is also a good starting point for excursions around the island. It is recommended for couples, seniors and those looking for tranquillity and authenticity.
