Asfendiou

Resort Asfendiou

The village of Asfendiou is one of the smaller and less touristic areas of Kos, which still retains its tranquillity and authentic atmosphere. There are no large hotels or busy tourist attractions here, but rather a few family-run guesthouses and apartments. The village has traditional tavernas and cafes offering local specialties, as well as several small grocery and souvenir shops. The tourist infrastructure is very limited.

Asfendiou currently has about 100 permanent inhabitants, who are mainly engaged in winemaking and olive oil production. It is surrounded by lush vegetation, olive trees, cypresses, pine trees and natural spring waters. The village is also distinguished by its interesting architecture with white houses, narrow streets and well-kept gardens. The village of Asfendiou consists of two 'neighbourhoods' - Evangelistria (Pera Geitonia) and Asomatos.

Asfendiou and tips for trips

Historical monuments of the area include the charming Byzantine church of the Virgin Mary from the early 19th century and the 11th-century church of Asomaton Taxiarchon, dedicated to the archangels Michael and Gabriel, which is the centre of the village of Asomatos. You can also visit the ruins of the ancient Christian basilica of Agios Pavlos (St. Paul) and the small church of the prophet Elijah on top of a hill very close to Asfendiou.

Asfendiou is part of a wider area including several smaller villages such as Zia, Lagoudi and Evangelistria, which are known for their beautiful architecture and spectacular views. The village is an ideal starting point for hiking, and you can climb to the top of the island, to the top of Mount Dikeos (840 m above sea level), from where you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the whole island of Kos, the nearby islands and the Turkish coast.

Nearby is the beautiful village of Zia, famous for its amazing sunset spectacle and its shops, where you can find everything from Greek souvenirs to local honey, herbs and spices. If you like historic buildings and churches, visit the neighbouring village of Lagoudi and its church of Agios Ioannis Theologos, built into the cliffs.

Asfendiou is an inland resort and therefore doesn't have its own beach, but its location in the hills makes it a great base for trips to the coast. The nearest beaches are in the resorts of Tigaki or Marmari, which can be easily reached by car. Both seaside resorts also boast beautiful sandy beaches.

For whom Asfendiou is suitable

Asfendiou is suitable for those looking for a peaceful holiday in an authentic environment. It is ideal for lovers of nature, hiking, photography and traditional Greek culture. It is especially recommended for couples, seniors and travelers who want to experience Kos Island in a different way than just from the beach resorts.
