Kefalos - Kos Island

Kefalos

The picturesque tourist resort of Kefalos is located on the south-west of the Greek island of Kos, about 43 kilometres from the main town of Kos.The place is known for its peaceful atmosphere, traditional Greek life and beautiful beaches.

The tourist resort of Kefalos

The resort of Kefalos is situated on the coast in the southwestern corner of the island and is well equipped for tourism. Visitors will find a wide range of hotels and apartments of various categories, from simple family accommodation to comfortable hotels with swimming pools and restaurants. There are many restaurants, tavernas and cafes along the beach and in the town centre, offering traditional Greek cuisine, fresh seafood and international specialities. The resort's tourist facilities also include several bars and small shops where you can buy food, souvenirs, clothing and beach equipment. Supermarkets and car or scooter rentals are also available, ensuring a comfortable stay without the need to travel to more distant parts of the island.

The original village of Kefalos is situated on a hilltop with a spectacular view of the bay of the same name and is definitely worth a visit as well. The narrow streets between the traditional houses still have the true Greek atmosphere. The village holds a carnival in February/March and festivals in July/August to honour the Virgin Mary and St John. Tourists are also welcome at both events. On the hill above Kefalos stands the Monastery of St. John (Agios Ioannis), a small blue and white church with beautiful interior decoration. On the 29th of August, it is the destination of local pilgrims.

Beaches around Kefalos

Kefalos Bay is characterised by cooler sea water compared to other parts of Kos. On the other hand, cooler seas are sought after by various species of fish, which you can see in schools while swimming. Kefalos beach lies in the lee of the surrounding rocks, sunbeds and umbrellas are provided and we recommend a visit to one of the local tavernas serving fresh fish dishes.

Kamari Beach, the closest beach to the resort, stretches for 5 kilometres. It is made up of golden sand and surrounded by clear blue water that invites swimming and snorkelling. Thanks to the favourable weather, Kefalos is a popular place for surfers. From the beach you can see the small island of Agios Nikolaos, called Kastri, where the chapel of St. Nicholas stands. The island with its blue and white chapel is a great attraction for photographers.

At the northern end of Kefalos beach is the small beach of Agios Stefanos with the remains of a Hellenistic temple and the early Christian basilica of St. Stephen. It is popular with families with children due to its leeward position and its gradual entry into the sea. Other pleasant beaches around the village include Paradise beach, fully equipped with sun loungers and tavernas, which is called Bubble beach due to the volcanic vents at the bottom of the sea, or Camel beach, also equipped with sun loungers and water sports, and on the north coast the small Limnionas beach with a tavern and a pier for fishing boats. So there are plenty of places to swim in the Kefalos area.

For whom is Kefalos suitable

The holiday resort of Kefalos is ideal for lovers of history, traditional Greek atmosphere and hiking. The hilltop village offers stunning views and access to nearby archaeological sites. The beaches in the area are great for families and couples. Kefalos will appeal to those who prefer tranquillity but also the opportunity to explore history and culture.
