The popular smaller resort of Mastichari is located on the northern coast of Kos, about 21 km southwest of the main town of Kos. The resort consists of a village with a harbour and a beautiful sandy beach, rated by many as one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Kos.
Mastichari is a picturesque resort on the north-west coast of Kos, popular for its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful beach and traditional tavernas. Although it is one of the smaller resorts, it offers everything you need for a comfortable and peaceful stay, ideal for families and peace lovers alike.
Originally a fishing village, Mastichari, located about 21 km from the capital of Kos and only 7 km from the international airport, has gradually become a popular destination. Today, however, it still retains some of its traditional charm, for example by fishermen selling their fresh catches to local restaurants and tavernas specialising in fish dishes and traditional Greek cuisine. So it may well be that the fish you've just ordered has only just been caught in the morning.
Accommodation in Mastichari tends to include smaller hotels, apartments and family-run guesthouses. The local promenade is a popular and lively place, with a variety of shops, souvenir shops and smaller boutiques. Nightlife in the resort is basically limited to tavernas where people discuss over a good meal.
Mastichari boasts a beautiful sandy beach which is one of the best on Kos. Mastichari beach has fine white sand and crystal clear water, ideal conditions for swimming and sunbathing. Sun loungers, umbrellas and several beach bars are available to visitors. Thanks to the regular strong winds, the area is also popular with water sports enthusiasts, especially windsurfing and kitesurfing. There is also a small marina for tourists.
While wandering around the town, visitors can also see the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 5th century and its detailed mosaic floor. For trips around the wider area, we recommend renting a car, motorbike or bicycle. There are also regular bus services and a taxi service between the resorts.
Ferries and boats depart regularly from Mastichari harbour to the nearby island of Kalymnos, famous for its tradition of collecting sea mushrooms. Smaller boats offer sightseeing cruises around the area and to the small islands of Plati and Pserimos. From the island of Kos it is also possible to sail to the nearby Turkish mainland, most often to the Turkish port town of Bodrum.
In the vicinity of Mastichari, the historic village of Antimachia (less than 6 km) is certainly worth a visit, where amidst the traditional architecture there is an admirably preserved windmill or a traditional Greek house. History buffs are also advised to visit the nearby Antimachia Castle (about 3 km further inland), built in the 14th century by the Knights of the Order of Johannites, which became an important bulwark of Kos against pirates and Ottoman raids.
Families with children may find the nearby Lido Waterpark, which offers a range of water attractions, attractive, or the Plaka Forest Animal Park, a great tip for anyone wanting to escape into nature for a while.
Mastichari is an ideal destination for those looking for a peaceful holiday in a pleasant environment, with the opportunity to discover the local culture and natural beauty of Kos.
