Platani, also known by its Turkish name Kermentes, is a small but lively village on the east of the Greek island of Kos, located just 3 km from the main town of Kos. The village of Platani is located in the interior of the island of Kos, about 3 km southwest of the main town of Kos and close to the famous archaeological site of Asklepion. The uniqueness of the village lies in the fact that most of the inhabitants are of Turkish origin and the village is also known by its Turkish name Kermentes. Platani / Kermentes is thus a unique example of the coexistence of two completely different religious groups, with Greek Christians and Greek Muslims living harmoniously side by side since the Ottoman occupation of the island.

Platani is one of the smaller resorts on the island, yet it is well equipped. The village has several tavernas, cafes and small grocery shops. The accommodation on offer locally is limited to a few small guesthouses and apartments, but its proximity to the capital and popular seaside resorts makes Platani easily accessible for those who want to enjoy the local atmosphere on their trips around the island. The name Platani is derived from the large plane tree that dominates the local square.

The coexistence of Muslims and traditional Greek Orthodox Christians is reflected in many aspects of life in Platani - in the local culture, gastronomy and architecture. In Platani you will find both a mosque and an Orthodox church. The mosque, built in 1784, is today the only place of worship of its kind in the area. The interior of the mosque is decorated with a painting depicting the entire Koran in verses handwritten in microscopic script. However, it is not open to the public. In addition to the Turkish cemetery, there is a Jewish cemetery near the village, hidden in the shade of pine trees.

Platani is an ideal place for a day trip, especially for lovers of gastronomy. The village is especially known for its traditional taverns with excellent Turkish and Greek cuisine, which attracts visitors eager for authentic flavours.

In addition to the restaurants, the nearby Asklepion Archaeological Park, one of the most important historical sites on the island, which was a renowned medical centre in ancient times, is also worth a visit.
