The small, peaceful resort of Zipari is located in the northern part of the Greek island of Kos, about 8 km west of the main town of Kos. Zipari is an original agricultural village that still retains its authentic Greek character and tranquillity.
Zipari is one of the smaller tourist resorts on the island of Kos and is characterised by its quiet town life. However, the number of permanent residents of Zipari is gradually increasing, according to the 2011 census the village already has more than 3,000 inhabitants, and has become a picturesque, thriving Greek settlement with new shops, cafes and an educational centre.
The symbol of Zipari is the beautiful large Church of the Ascension, built in the 20th century. The ruins of the early Christian basilica of St Paul and the 5th-6th century Kapama Basilica have also been discovered in the area.
The village has several grocery and souvenir shops, traditional taverns and cafes where you can enjoy local cuisine. Accommodation is limited, comprising rather small guesthouses or apartments. Larger hotel complexes are located in the seaside area.
Although Zipari is an inland resort and does not have its own beach, access to the sea is very good as it is only about 2 km from the coast. Locals and tourists from Zipari mostly head to the beaches in the nearby resorts of Tigaki (about 3 km) or Marmari (about 6 km), or east to the capital Kos and the popular beaches of Zouroudi and Lambi.
The village and its surroundings are interesting for history and nature lovers. The area around Zipari is rather flat and suitable for walking and cycling. There are several wineries near Zipari offering tours of the vineyards and cellars.
Thanks to its central location, Zipari is a convenient point for excursions to the capital of Kos with its beautiful historical centre and monuments, to the archaeological site of Asklepion or to the nature reserve of Alikes Lagoon.
In the Dikeos Mountains, rising towards the interior of the island, there are several picturesque mountain villages, such as Lagoudi, Asfendiou or Zia, which are certainly also worth a visit.
Zipari is suitable for travellers who prefer quieter destinations away from the busy tourist resorts. With its proximity to the island's main attractions and easy accessibility, it is ideal for seniors and couples looking for a relaxing base for their excursions and exploring the beauty of Kos.
