The Monastery of St. John (Agios Ioannis) is located in the interior of the island of Kos, in the area east of the village of Kefalos, surrounded by hilly countryside. The monastery is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, an important figure of Christianity, and has become a place of spiritual renewal and prayer for the local population for centuries.

Although the exact date of the monastery's foundation is unknown, it is estimated that it was built in the Byzantine period, probably sometime between the 11th and 13th centuries. It served as a refuge for monks and believers who came here to seek peace and communion with God. The monastery also gained a place in the history of Kos during the Ottoman rule, when it played an important role in protecting the cultural and religious identity of the local population.

The monastery presents traditional Greek architecture and its combination of blue and white makes it unmissable. It is set in the peaceful surroundings of the surrounding green countryside and the pleasant atmosphere of the place is further enhanced by a mature plane tree and several benches. Visitors can relax in its shade and enjoy the scenery.

The church is relatively small, but its interior is certainly worth seeing. Beautiful icons and frescoes adorn the walls and a golden chandelier hangs from the ceiling. The courtyard in front of the church was paved in the traditional style using small white and grey pebbles. Next to the monastery there is another building that was used as a hostel for the monks. And a few steps away there is a bell tower, unfortunately already partially destroyed.

Today, St. John's Monastery is in good condition and still serves as a place for religious ceremonies and celebrations, especially during the feasts dedicated to St. John the Baptist, which attract the faithful from all over the island and tourists. It is busier on the 29th of August. The surroundings of the monastery are well-kept and full of olive and cypress trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere for prayer or meditation.

The Monastery of Agios Ioannis is an ideal destination for those seeking a break from the busy tourist areas and wanting to explore the traditional spiritual and cultural side of Kos. A trip to this monastery can be made either by car or on foot (for those who prefer hiking routes). The monastery is located at the other end of the island from the capital of Kos, yet the distance between them is only about 46 km. The Greek island of Kos is not large, so you can go on a trip almost anytime and anywhere.
