Paleo Pili is an old Byzantine town founded at the foot of Mount Dikeos, now abandoned.Tourists are attracted here mainly by the atmosphere of the place and the remains of the castle, which was built between the 9th and 11th centuries, when the Greek islands, including the island of Kos, were under the rule of the Byzantine Empire. When Kos was occupied by the Knights of St. John, the castle was repaired and turned into a fortress for the defence of the island. If you climb to the top here, you'll be rewarded with incredible views of the wide surroundings, such as the resort of Marmari and the neighbouring islands of Pserimos and Kalymnos, and with good visibility you can even see the Turkish coast.

The remains of the Byzantine city lie below the castle. The area is open to the public, and visitors to the village can walk along the old paths, courtyards and among the ruins of the houses that tell of its glory and ruin. Among the remains of medieval buildings are Byzantine churches dedicated to St. John and St. Mary. These churches are a testament to the spiritual importance of the town and its rich religious past, even though they are mostly in ruins today. In the ruins we can also see the reservoirs that were important for the city's water supply. It is said that the village was abandoned in the 19th century due to an epidemic.

When visiting the town of Palio Pyli, tourists can also visit the 14th century Ipapanti Church, with its beautiful frescoes, carved wooden icons and ancient Greek columns dating from a temple that existed here in ancient times. There is also a smaller church dedicated to Michael.

The ancient town of Paleo Pili is situated in the hills between the villages of Pili and Zia and is easily accessible by road (it takes less than half an hour from the main town of Kos). Visitors can leave their car in the small car park at the ancient village and continue on foot. After exploring the remains of the Byzantine village, you can also head up to the castle ruins and experience truly spectacular views in all directions. Sturdy shoes and plenty of water are recommended. The place is surrounded by beautiful nature.
