The Dikeos Mountains, stretching southwest of the capital of Kos, are one of the most popular tourist destinations for nature lovers and hikers.With its peak reaching an altitude of 846 metres, Dikeos is the highest point on the island and offers unique panoramic views of Kos, the surrounding islands and the distant Turkish coast. The hiking trails in the Dikeos Mountains lead through dense pine forests, past ancient churches and picturesque villages such as the famous village of Zia, where visitors can experience the authentic atmosphere of the island. The journey to the top is not technically demanding, but requires good physical fitness as the climb can be steep in places. However, the reward for the effort is the amazing views from the top, which are one of the biggest attractions of this hike.

It is advisable to start early in the morning to avoid the worst of the heat, especially in the summer months. The starting points for hiking are the villages of Zia or Asfendiou, from where marked trails lead to the summit. There are also smaller chapels along the way where hikers can rest and soak up the peaceful surroundings. In addition to hiking, the Dikeos Mountains also offer opportunities for cycling and photography, as the surrounding nature and scenery are truly magnificent.

In ancient times, the mountain was known as Oromedon, Orion and Dikeon. Explorations carried out in the area have also revealed traces of medieval settlements. Today, there is a small church of Agios Christos and a large cross on the summit. On the feast of August 5, the mountain comes alive with processions of locals.
