Trip from the island of Kos

Kalymnos Island

A popular tourist excursion is a boat trip to the nearby island of Kalymnos, a picturesque Greek island located northwest of the island of Kos. The island of Kalymnos is famous for its fishing, processing and export of sea mushrooms. However, it offers much more, with sportsmen coming here for rock climbing and diving.

Kalymnos, a small island in the Aegean Sea, lies northwest of the island of Kos and is easily accessible by boat. Kalymnos is a mountainous and rocky island with an irregular coastline, which is especially known for its natural beauty.

The island's capital and largest town is Pothia (officially Kalymnos), a picturesque harbour town with colourful houses spread out on the hillsides. The town also attracts several smaller museums, including the Museum of Sea Mushrooms, which commemorates the island's traditional industries. Formerly known as a supplier of sea mushrooms to the surrounding area, Kalymnos now maintains this tradition mainly because of the tourists who come here.

The local nature may seem a little harsh, but it has its own charm. The island of Kalymnos and its nature are often sought after by sport climbers, as Kalymnos is an important sport climbing centre thanks to its rock massifs. Climbers can choose climbing routes of varying difficulty.

In addition to sea mushrooms and climbing, Kalymnos also attracts visitors with its beautiful beaches such as Kantouni or Myrties, which offer clear water and peaceful surroundings. Interesting rock formations and lively marine life make the island's coastline a great place for diving and snorkelling. There are several diving schools available to visitors and a "diving festival" is organised at the end of the summer season. The island also has a museum of marine discoveries (in Vlyhadia Bay on the south coast), created by local diver Valsamidis from the many marine treasures he found on his dives.

Kalymnos is located just a few kilometres from the neighbouring island of Kos, within sight of the resorts of Tigaki, Marmari and Mastichari. The island can be reached by ferry from Kos town. The cruise takes approximately one hour and boat connections are regular during the tourist season. Cruise ships also leave from the port of Mastichari.

A popular excursion among tourists is a boat trip including a visit to the three smaller islands of Kalymnos, Plati and Pserimos. For a longer stay, Kalymnos is ideal for those looking for a combination of relaxation on the beaches and active experiences such as rock climbing or diving.
