Salt Lake Alikes (Alykes) - Kos island

Salt Lake Alikes (Alykes)

The salt lake of Alikes, located near the resort of Tigaki, is one of the most interesting natural sites on the island of Kos.The lake, which was once used for salt mining, is now home to many species of birds and offers visitors a peaceful atmosphere, unique views and the opportunity to observe flamingos, which often overwinter here.

The salt lake of Alikes (or Alykes) is located off the northern coast of the Greek island of Kos, near the resorts of Marmari and Tigaki. It is one of the most important natural areas on the island, popular not only with locals but also with tourists. Originally, the lake, with an area of less than 1 km2, was used to obtain table salt, and was one of the largest sources in the whole of Greece. Today, the lake functions mainly as a nature reserve and a refuge for many species of birds.

The salt lake is separated from the sea only by sand dunes and the vegetation that reinforces its shores, and its seasonal variation is very interesting. In the summer, when the water evaporates, the lake dries out for the most part and a thin layer of salt covers its surface, forming a white crust resembling snow. In winter and spring, on the other hand, it is full of water and attracts many birds, including rare species, making the lake a popular destination for nature lovers and photographers. During the breeding season, you can see flocks of birds and in winter, for example, migratory birds, including the beautiful flamingos that use the area around the lake as a wintering ground. The local flora is also very interesting, with various species of flowers, including protected ones.

The lake is easily accessible by car, bike or on foot. From the main town of Kos (about 12 km) you can reach it by road towards Tigaki, where there are several marked paths leading to the lake. Nearby you will also find restaurants and cafes where you can relax after your walk. An unusual and unforgettable way to see the lake is from horseback, the local farm (Erikas Horse Farm) offers horse rentals to ride around the lake.

The ideal time to visit is early morning or afternoon, when the light is at its best for nature watching and photography, and by evening you will be bothered by the many annoying mosquitoes.
