The Embros Thermal Springs are a unique natural attraction on Kos, popular with tourists and locals alike. These healing hot springs spring up off the east coast of the island, about 12 km from the capital of Kos, and together with the surrounding rocks form a small natural lake.
The Embros Thermal Springs are located on the wild coast in the eastern part of Kos, near the resort of Agios Fokas. These natural springs rise from the rocky bedrock to form a hot water reservoir surrounded by rocks, where they mix with the cooler sea. The site is also known as the Empros Thermes natural thermal baths.
The adjacent Thermes beach is pebbly, made up of small dark volcanic pebbles and stones. There is a spring here which reaches temperatures of up to 80 °C, other springs are about 60 °C. The stones and rocks form a small natural lake around the springs, so that the warm springs do not immediately escape into the open sea. However, due to the high daytime temperatures on the Greek islands during the summer, we recommend bathing in the thermal baths in the evening or very early in the morning. Or outside the enclosed lake, where the hot springs are already mixed with the cooler sea water and the water is at a more pleasant temperature.
The water in the baths contains large amounts of calcium, sodium, sulphur, magnesium and other ions. Beware of silver jewellery and costume jewellery, the springs also contain sulphur which can cause them to turn black. It will not harm real gold. Sulphur springs also give off a typical smell. On the other hand, sulphur thermal springs have very positive effects on the skin and alleviate skin problems (e.g. eczema or psoriasis), among other things. Their beneficial effect on joints is also reported.
Bathing in the thermal pool is free of charge. There is a car park on top of the lake, and public transport also runs here. However, be prepared that from the car park it is about 400 m down to the shore on a dirt road. There is no refreshment stand right by the beach and the springs, but several tavernas are located nearby. Visitors are therefore advised to take plenty of liquids with them in addition to their water shoes.
There is one other place on Kos where thermal springs spring up, near the town of Agia Irina. However, these springs cannot be reached from the mainland and are only accessible from the sea by boat. The reason for the presence of hot thermal springs near Kos is the proximity of the volcanic island of Nissyros.
