For our holiday we chose the beautiful Greek island of Rhodes. But how do we get there? Rhodes is an island, so we have two transport options - by air or by sea.
By plane from the Czech Republic to Rhodes takes about 2.5 hours net time (not counting the time needed to get to the airport from our place of residence, time for check-in at the airport, etc.). Air transport is very popular for this destination because it is relatively fast and above all comfortable. Some connections may be with a stopover in Athens, from where there are regular domestic flights to the Greek islands. It is therefore advisable to make enquiries in advance, as this would unnecessarily prolong your journey. However, most flights to Rhodes from the Czech Republic are direct. There is one airport on Rhodes - Diagoras Airport. It is located 14 km from the capital of Rhodes and its international code is RHO.
If you are planning a sightseeing tour of Greece or if you wish to visit more places on your holiday, it is possible to get around quite well by boat. Some adventurers even drive their own car to Greece - and if they want to take their pet to one of the islands, they have to use ferries. You can travel to the islands either by larger and slower ferries or by faster catamarans (high speed boats), but these tend to be more expensive too. If you are sailing to Rhodes from mainland Greece, then you will probably be sailing from the largest and busiest ferry port of Piraeus, located on the southern coast of Greece, about 10 km from Athens. The largest cruise companies operate a daily service between these two ports and the Piraeus-Rhodes crossing takes around 15 to 16 hours. You can make good use of several online connection search engines to plan your route (see below the article for a list). Tickets can be purchased in advance online. However, if you are not tied to transporting your own car and don't mind the flexibility of a plus or minus day, we recommend buying your tickets on the spot one or two days before your scheduled departure. Boat schedules are highly dependent on the weather, which can change in a matter of hours. If you want to be sure, choose a larger ferry that can sail in worse weather conditions.
