The small, peaceful village of Apolakkia is located in the southern part of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 85 km southwest of the capital city. The village is situated in an agriculturally fertile area.
The village of Apolakkia is located on the road running along the eastern coast of Rhodes and although it is an inland village, it is not far from the sea (about 2 km). From Apolakkia there is also a road that connects the eastern coast of the island with its western shores (the Apolakkia - Vati - Gennadi road).
The village lies in a valley between two hills and its surroundings are literally dotted with olive groves. Besides the olive fields, you can also find citrus bushes and the wonderfully sweet and juicy melons for which Apolakkia is famous all over the island. There's even a "melon festival" in the summer.
The main part of the village is a picturesque square with several shops and taverns. The village also harbours a beautiful church which, although it doesn't stand directly on the square, if you want to see it, you have to follow the white line painted on the ground.
The tourist resort of Apolakkia consists not only of the village itself, but also its beautiful surroundings, including the nearby Apolakkia (Limni) Beach and the large artificial lake Apolakkia. The natural, pebbly beach of Apolakkia is part of a protected nature reserve.
The Apolakkia Dam lies about 4 km north of the village. It was completed in 1989 as a water supply for this important agricultural area. The area around the lake is covered with bushes and trees which provide pleasant shade and people also commonly bathe in the water. The dam is also ideal for sailing. The Apolakkia dam is important in terms of the local ecosystem as it has gradually become an important wetland and bird breeding area.
If you head to the lake, don't miss the beautiful Byzantine church of Agios Georgios, which stands right next to the lake. The church dates back to 1290.
Apolakkia is not a typical holiday resort, as it is located in a remote and relatively deserted area of Rhodes. The biggest tourist resorts and the busiest resorts are located in the northern part of the island, here in the south life is much more peaceful. But it is here where you have the opportunity to observe the traditional life of the locals.
The village of Apolakkia is usually visited by tourists passing through the south of the island, for example to the famous surfing beach of Prasonisi or going for a hike or sightseeing in the nearby area. In addition to the beautiful Lake Apolakkia, visitors also head for the famous Skiadenis Monastery, which is still inhabited by monks and is a home to the silver icon of the Holy Madonna (located south of the village). Nearby, on top of a high cliff, the ruins of the Johannite castle of Monolithos are standing (located north of the village).
