The small but rather lively village of Archipolis is located inland, in the northern part of the Greek island of Rhodes. It lies about 32 km southwest of the capital city of Rhodes.
The village of Archipolis (or Archipoli) is located in a quiet area of the Rhodian backland, in the company of the other villages of Eleousa, Dimilia and Apollona. The surrounding area of Archipolis is literally covered with olive groves and vast forests, especially old pine trees, whose scent is omnipresent.
The locals are very friendly and hospitable and work mainly in agriculture and partly in tourism. The village of Archipolis is not so far from the busy tourist resorts on the east coast of the island (e.g. it is about 9 km from the popular tourist resort of Kolymbia), but still retains a rather quiet and traditional character. There are, however, several excellent taverns and cafes as well as several accommodation options.
The village is said to owe its name to Prince Archepolis, who came to Rhodes from Crete to recover from a serious illness. The prince did indeed recover and the new town took his name.
About 2 km from the village towards Kolymbia, in a place called Kryoneri, stands the beautiful church of Agios Nektarios (St. Nektarios), whose interior is decorated with a large number of artistic frescoes. The church is also very popular for weddings and christenings. In front of the church grows a huge plane tree, which is said to be over 2500 years old and in its shade Paul the Apostle preached.
A hiking trail (about 4 km long) starts right next to the church, which will take you through beautiful nature with interesting rock formations. At the end of the trail, the most persistent ones will be rewarded with an amazing view of the wide surroundings.
