Asklipio - island of Rhodes
The beautiful inland village of Asklipio is located in the southeastern part of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 64 km southwest of the capital city. The village is dominated by the ruins of the medieval castle of Asklipio, which stands on a nearby hill.
The tourist resort of Asklipio
The village of Asklipio is situated in the hilly terrain of the Rhodian backland and its surroundings are literally dotted with olive trees and vines. Asklipio is a smaller village, but very beautiful and quite lively, as there are many permanent residents.
The focal point of the village is the square in front of the Byzantine Church of the Assumption. There are several nice taverns and restaurants, a number of shops and the resort also offers accommodation services (from cheap apartments to modern guesthouses).
Asklipio and historical monuments
The village is known especially for its beautiful historical monuments. The Church of the Assumption, of which the oldest part dates back to 1060, has recently been restored and is beautiful both outside and especially inside. The interior of the church is decorated with fine murals from the Byzantine period.
There is also a small folklore museum attached to the church, which is housed in the former oil press building. In the museum you will see historical exhibits of various nature, religious objects and icons as well as tools used in everyday life in agriculture and oil pressing.
The village is dominated by the medieval castle of Asklipio, which overlooks it from a nearby hill. Asklipio Castle was built by the Knights of St. John in the 15th century and its remains are now freely accessible to the public.
The village is said to have got its name from an ancient temple dedicated to Asklipio, the god of medicine and healing, which once stood here. Unfortunately, its remains have not survived.
Asklipio as a tip for a trip
The village is a frequent destination for tourists from the surrounding area, especially from the popular seaside resort of Kiotari, from where it can also be reached by bike (the resort is about 4 km away).
