The small, quiet seaside resort of Fanes lies at the northwest coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 25 km southwest of the capital city.
Fanes is a traditional, originally fishing village, but it is unique and famous for something. The local painter and artist Loukas Nikolitsis spent some time abroad, where he gained new experiences, but when he returned home to Fanes, he found the village sad and grey. Therefore, in 2010 he convinced the locals and together they started to decorate the whole village. The houses got a new coat of paint, even those that had been abandoned and dilapidated for a long time. Specific places were then added with unique drawings. Today, some of the paintings have peeled off due to time and weather, but on the other hand, also some new ones are being added. Fanes is sometimes called the "village of colours" and is definitely worth a visit.
The village of Fanes is very peaceful and not too affected by tourist traffic, visitors can find here basic services such as shops, cafes, bars and several apartments for rent.
The village of Fanes is located about 1.5 km from the coast towards the interior of the island, but a new hotel complex has been built right on the coast, next to a beautiful sandy beach. If you book a trip to Fanes through a travel agency, you will most likely be heading to one of the hotels on the coast.
These hotels provide their clients with all the necessary services, but the area around the resort is already poorer and you have to drive to the bigger tourist resorts for excursions or entertainment. The resort of Fanes is located in a quiet part of Rhodes, at the west coast of the island, between the resorts of Kalavarda and Soroni.
The adjacent Fanes Beach is rather narrow, but long and mixed in type (pebble-sand). It is particularly popular with kite-surfers and wind-surfers, who enjoy excellent weather conditions here, similar to the nearby Kalavarda Beach (Kalavarda Resort).
The resort is located in a quiet part of the island of Rhodes, away from the busy tourist resorts on the east coast. The local hotels are recommended for clients seeking peace and relaxation and the accommodation is also used by tourists heading here for water sports.
If you don't want to spend your entire holiday in the resort, it is advisable to either rent a car or use the local transport, with buses usually going to the hotels.
Not far from here (east to the interior of the island, a journey of about 20 km) is the Petaloudes Nature Reserve, the so-called Valley of the Butterflies, where thousands of butterflies flock every year, literally enveloping the local logs and stones. At the upper end of the walking route stands a small white church, the Monastery of Kalopetras, dating from 1782. The monastery boasts a beautifully decorated interior.
