The small, quiet seaside resort of Gennadi is located on the southeast coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 64 km south of the capital city. Gennadi is a typical representative of the peaceful southern part of the island of Rhodes.
The resort of Gennadi is located about 4 km south of the neighbouring resort of Kiotari, on the main road connecting the famous resort of Lindos with the south of the island. And while Kiotari is still a fairly busy tourist resort with several large, modern hotels and entertainment for the whole family, Gennadi is a much quieter and more deserted resort, not yet much affected by tourism.
In the case of Gennadi, it is a former agricultural area, which is still very evident today. As you drive through the resort, you pass fields, wasteland and a few houses and villas in between. Nice, quite modern villas were built here mainly by the inhabitants of the capital city as their holiday homes and during the last decade, a few guesthouses and small hotels have been built here to offer accommodation to tourists.
In Gennadi, visitors can also find several restaurants and taverns, a post office, a pharmacy, an ATM and car and motorbike rentals.
The village also harbours two beautiful churches, which should not be missed during a walk here. The church of Agios Ioannis Theologos, whose hallmark is a tall white bell tower, dates back to the 19th century. The older, Romanesque church of St. Anastasia of Byzantium dates from the 12th century and is particularly impressive for its magnificent interior, which is decorated with frescoes from the 13th to 17th century.
The resort includes the long pebble beach of Gennadi. Very peaceful, partly organised and with a nice view of the sea in the distance.
If you head inland from Gennadi and then towards the west coast of Rhodes, you will pass through the village of Apolakkia until you reach the castle of Monolithos. Monolithos is also the final stop of the bus line between the capital city of Rhodes and the west coast of the island.
After a few minutes walk from this stop (where you can also park if you are heading here from Gennadi in a rental car), you will reach a wooden bench from which you can observe the beautiful Monolithos Castle. The castle of Monolithos dates back to the 15th century and rises at the very top of a block of rock surrounded only by trees and the sea. If you take the path further to the castle itself, you can see the remains of its battlements or chapel. However, what is definitely worth seeing is the view of the coastline below you and the island of Chalki.
The southern tip of the island and the unique Prasonisi Beach, known as a surfer's paradise, are also very interesting excursion tips. The southernmost tip of the island is only connected to the island itself by a strip of quicksand and sometimes you may find that you can't walk through it with dry feet. At the very south of the island, you'll find an abandoned lighthouse.
North along the coast (about 22 km), you can visit the famous and beautiful ancient town of Lindos with the acropolis of Lindos.
Due to the nature of the resort, we can say that Gennadi is not the ideal place for the typical and "majority" visitor to Rhodes who wants to enjoy his holiday in a modern hotel with a variety of tourist services, to go out to the bustling tourist centre with its many restaurants, bars and taverns or to the beach with water sports facilities. Such facilities are not to be expected from this resort, Gennadi is a very quiet place, almost deserted, although otherwise nice.
Gennadi, on the other hand, can be a good tip for those who are tired of touristy holiday resorts and want to spend some time alone with themselves and the wild nature around them. For the unpretentious tourist, Gennadi is a good starting point for exploring the face of the south of Rhodes, which is different from the north of the island. However, you will need a car to get around as you can't rely much on public transport in these parts.
The resort of Gennadi also accommodates surfers heading south to Prasonisi Beach where accommodation is very limited and also expensive.
