The popular tourist resort of Lindos is located at the southeast coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 50 km south of the capital city. The resort is famous for the eponymous ancient village and the ancient acropolis with the remains of a temple.
The sought-after holiday resort of Lindos is situated on a small peninsula jutting out into the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, forming the small and pleasant Lindos Bay (about 1 km long). A pebble beach runs all the length of the bay and there are several small hotels right on the coast. The resort has good tourist facilities in the form of restaurants, taverns, beach bars and other services.
However, there is a big difference between the hotel resort of Lindos, which was artificially created for tourism purposes and is located on the coast of the island and the original village of Lindos, which lies about 2 km inland and gave the name to the whole area.
In the old village of Lindos we can find many other taverns and above all countless souvenir shops of all kinds, which are literally at every turn. Some enterprising women don't even need a shop and sell straight from the window or on the kerbs around the road. Accommodation here tends to be single rooms for rent, with larger accommodation such as guesthouses and villas further inland.
The village of Lindos was once a thriving fishing area and retains much of its original rich architecture to this day. Visitors will be particularly pleasantly surprised by the unforced combination of old buildings and modern elements. Lindos is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The images of the old village of Lindos are very familiar - the white houses, side by side, at the foot of the hill, over which the ancient acropolis with the temple of Athena of Lindos and the Hellenistic columns is towering. Do you remember these photos? The "White Town of Lindos" is truly unique and belongs to the most interesting archaeological sites on the island of Rhodes. However, due to the original narrow streets made of cat heads, tourists cannot reach this beauty by car, so they must either walk up the hill or use the services of local donkeys and be taken up on their backs.
On the way to the old village, tourists can also take a peek into the Cave of Cleobulus, visit the medieval Orthodox Church of St. Peter or discover the remains of an ancient theatre preserved near the beach of St. Paul.
The seaside resort of Lindos has several beaches and small beaches.
The largest of the local beaches is called Vlycha (Vlicha). It is a sand and shingle beach in the tourist centre of the resort, near the hotel area. It has been awarded the Blue Flag and is suitable for children due to its gradual entry into the sea.
Below the Acropolis lies Lindos Beach and the smaller Pallas Beach. Lindos Beach (or Megali Paralia) is a beautiful, shallow beach with golden sand, suitable for children. Both Lindos and Pallas are sandy beaches, with classic beach service, but they are often crowded in the main tourist season (especially Lindos Beach). However, the view of the town of Lindos with the acropolis is worth a visit.
Other, smaller beaches can be found in St. Paul's Bay. The rocky coastline creates many tiny beaches in this area, which have the advantage of peace and privacy.
The resort of Lindos is quite well positioned to explore the beauty of the whole island, as it is located roughly in the middle of the eastern coast and you will have the whole island at your fingertips. The main road connecting the area to the north of the island runs through the resort and the local bus service also works well during the high season, with routes to the capital city of Rhodes and other resorts on the island.
Apart from the ancient village of Lindos and the beautiful St. Paul's Bay, we also recommend visiting the thermal baths of Kalithea or the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) and of course the capital city of Rhodes with its rich sights and culture.
Lindos is a truly beautiful area with important historical monuments, soothing nature and good tourist facilities in the form of a seaside tourist resort. However, if you are keen to stay right in the old village of Lindos, pay close attention to this when booking your stay. Most holiday packages are sold to hotel complexes located on the coast of the island near Vlycha Beach and only a small number are directly related to the ancient village of Lindos. On the other hand, Lindos is only a few kilometers away from the hotel district.
If we look at the map of the island, this promontory symbolically divides the eastern coast of Rhodes into two parts - the northern half, which is very lively and busy with tourists (the airport, the capital city of Rhodes, resorts such as Faliraki and Kolymbia are located here) and the southern part, which is quieter and not so affected by tourism (Kiotari, Gennadi, etc.). Lindos combines something from each of these parts.
The resort attracts different types of clients - from families with children who enjoy the sandy beaches and the gradual entrance to the sea, to couples in love who seek privacy on the secluded beaches and nightlife in Lindos, to the travellers who come out every day in search of the greatest jewels of Rhodes.
